A Delightful Dinner!

So I got to the college’s restaurant on time. I notice three of the full timers hovering around the restaurants doors and the girl at the door smiles in acknowledgement as she recognises me as one of the part timers. I remember seeing her in the locker rooms.

I see through the side window that ‘Va’ and ‘M’ are already standing in the restaurant so I continue walking towards the door. The girl asks me “Are you here with the other…” I quickly say “Yes I am” before she can finish. Ooops. She tells me to go on through.

I walk in and ‘Va’ and ‘M’ smile and greet me. A man approaches me and hands me a glass of bubbly. I thank him and then ‘Va’ tells me that ‘I’ will be joining us which surprises me as I was 99% sure she wasn’t coming. She wasn’t in Monday and every time we mentioned it to her she kept giving us multiple different reasons/excuses why she probably wouldn’t be coming.

I ask ‘Va’ and ‘M’ if they know where we are sitting as the other diners had already been seen to their seats on arrival as well as taken their coat. ‘Va’ tells me they should have taken mine so I take mine off and give it to one of the full timers that are coming towards us from the door. ‘I’ turns up and does that whole hug and kiss on the cheek thing…. I don’t do that… I’m iffy shaking hands with someone and I only hug specific people but the whole kissing someone on the cheek is just… I only do that with my children and to my partner when I have one… It’s just the way I was raised and the way that I am.

I end up asking one of the full timers where are we sitting and they look confused and respond with a “I don’t know… Let me check”…. Okay… Five minutes later and they are whispering to one another and looking over not knowing what to tell us so we end up just gravitating towards an empty table for four in the back.

This was the menu;

Welcome Canapes

– Duo of Melon

– Spinach and Walnut Pesto, Sun Blush Tomato

– Mini Yorkshire filled with Roast Beef, Horseradish

– Smoked Salmon Blini, Dill,Crème Fraîche

– Greyfriars Cuvée Brut

(Showcasing British sparkling, from a well-known producer in Surrey)

– Prawn Bisque

– Tomato and Smoked Bean Soup, chopped Chives, Foccacia

– Picpoul Di Pinet

(A wine that is very much having a revival, and works very well with seafood dishes)

Main Course

– Confit Duck Leg & Duck Bon Bon, Winter Greens, Beetroot Ketchup, Dauphinoise

– Wild Mushroom Risotto, Lemon, Chocolate, Crispy Kale

– Côte Du Rhône, Chapoutier

(Smooth but complex and pairs very well with game)

– Warm Cherry and Frangipane Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream, Brandy Snap Tuile

– Pedro Ximinez Noe Sherry

(A nice combination of soft fruits and almond will compliment the dessert)

All served with Tea & Coffee

–  Petite Fours

I wont go into too much detail because it will be a very long post and it wasn’t meant to be. I had four ‘Duo of melons’, three ‘Mini Yorkshire filled with Roast Lamb, Horseradish’ and one ‘Smoked Salmon, Blini, Dill, Crème Fraîche’.

I preferred the Greyfriars Cuvée Brut out of all the Wines we had tried. I asked for top ups throughout the evening and preferred that to drink with all the dishes. We all got given ‘Prawn Bisque’  without giving our choices.

We all said we hadn’t chosen the ‘Prawn Bisque’ but then we were told that because we were special guests that we would get to try all dishes on the menu which I was delighted about since that way I could really try it all and be able to see which I would like etc.

But after the prawn bisque we were never brought the ‘Tomato and Smoked Bean Soup, chopped Chives, Foccacia’ which I then asked about it and was told it was because we said we didn’t have any dietary requirements so they just gave us the meat one… I wasn’t happy.

You don’t go to a restaurant and they tell you to eat what they have put in front of you instead of letting you choose regardless if you have no dietary requirements… ‘Prawn Bisque’ would not be something I would ever really buy when I go out to eat… Also I was annoyed that we were told we could have both to then not and be told that wouldn’t happen… I mean…. Can you see why I would be miffed at this?

When they start bringing out the ‘Confit Duck Leg & Duck Bon Bon, Winter Greens, Beetroot Ketchup, Dauphinoise‘ I take the plate but then ask for the Wild Mushroom Risotto, Lemon, Chocolate, Crispy Kale’ as well… He did panic a bit but I explained that since I never got to choose my starter I would like to try a bit of both and he said he would ask… and did bring me the bowl of it which was decent of him and I did apologise to him in case I was being awkward for him but his response was nice and I decided I liked this server out of the rest!

I really only wanted to try the risotto because it had chocolate in it and to be honest I couldn’t taste any… I was very  iffy about the duck because I have never eaten duck before I have always said I wouldn’t… When I was a kid my dads mum took me to feed the ducks one day and then when we went back to her house she served duck for dinner and It made me go vegetarian due to being so put off and awful about it… Obviously didn’t last long as I am a meat lover as an adult but I still stuck by the whole I wouldn’t eat duck idea…

I tried the duck because I have been broadening my horizons  I mean I was at a wine tasting dinner event and I am not a wine person… Well after trying a bit of the duck I still felt awful and sad about eating the duck and it didn’t taste good to me… So still sticking to not eating duck. Then came dessert which was very yummy and by this point I was on my fifth glass of Greyfriars Cuvée Brut’.

We had all been laughing and talking about all kind of things and it was time for our tea and coffee… We all wanted tea but only tea cups, milk, sugar cubes and a dish of petite fours were put on the table… When someone came round they had coffee and when we said we wanted tea we were waiting around again… By the time the tea pots came round all the petite fours were gone.

Our Teacher/Chef came out and sat with us and we all had a giggle and conversations… Apparently we were labelled the loud and demanding table which to be fair we probably were… me being demanding about the food thing which I wasn’t rude about… and ‘M’ with his slamming of the palm on the table while going into an expressive story.

I managed to get him to let us have more petite fours. and then I had my last top up of my glass and then Julie came out! She said she heard that table number two was being a nuisance, wanting more drinks and being rather loud and wanting more food etc… Obviously meaning it all in a a lighthearted way which I then admitted to the drink and food thing but it did make me laugh.

We then got urged to pay our bill as they need to close up the till and start closing up so we paid and chatted some more till we were told to get out which was also quite funny or at least it was at the time and I guess a year or so without drinking then suddenly drinking five or so glasses of bubbly will make you giggle a bit…

Well ‘I’ had to catch a bus. ‘M’ went off to continue drinking as he was “running dry” and ‘Va’ was going to wait around for her husband to come pick her up but at the time he was in the cinema. I hung around to wait with her as I only lived round the corner so wouldn’t have to go far and didn’t mind sitting with her. And it gave us the chance to properly talk…

I told her about this blog and that I wasn’t brave enough to post it on my social media yet. I also told her the personal things I had just told her a little about I have yet to post on here… And she was really good company and nice to talk to and listen etc. But then the whole evening with them all I enjoyed it a lot and was good company.

It had been the first time eating out without the kids in a long while! We had to leave the college as the doors were gonna lock us in and then we would have set the alarms off… But 5 mins or so more outside and then her husband turned up. She offered me a lift and although it was literally just round the corner I accepted because It was cold and also would give her the chance to see where I lived. She has invited me to come to her house at some point and maybe help her cook for her market food.

Well anyway I was dropped off at home, had a great evening, I talked, I drank, I ate and even spoke my mind which doesn’t happen as often as I would like! But I’m trying !

We should be doing another dinner thing soon…Or so ‘M’ suggested… It would be nice to continue these things…But was a shame not all of us were there. Anyway…

Thanks for reading 🙂
