College Update (week 17)

Pastry Week

This week was good. We made 3 types of pastry from scratch and was able to take them home. I noticed in my  feedback notes from my Chef/Teacher said that although last week I did really well I was just a bit slow to begin with but caught up okay and need to work on keeping up from the get go…

So this week I was ahead to start with but then my puff pastry was being difficult and set me behind again but sure enough I managed to get up to speed. I also got offered two amazing opportunities!

So I got offered to be one of the chefs for this ‘Dining In The Dark’ event that’s happening on 6th February and would be allowed to experience it after cooking the food which sounded awesome to me I have always wanted to try that out as i have seen it in films before. 

The second opportunity was that I was chosen as one of the students to be invited to this hospitality showcase in London on the 7th February which is a big deal!

But just as easily elated I was by these offers I was just as easily deflated and disheartened when I realised I couldn’t do either of them…

The ‘Dining In The Dark’ event would be from 10am to 3pm.  – My daughter finishes nursery at 11:30am. I can’t bring a 3 year old to a dining in the dark experience. and I would have to pick my son up at 3:15pm.

The London showcase event would be from 8am – 6pm. My daughter doesn’t have nursery that day. The earliest my son would be able to be at school would be 8am and latest that day is 3:15pm. Even if I was able to get my daughter in to nursery that day it would only be from 8:30am – 3:30pm. My Chef/Teacher did say he would be able to get the college to cover my travel if I was to take a train when I was able to so later and then come back earlier but unsure about covering child care not to mention would it even allow me to spend that much time there if I was to get there later and eave earlier? I doubt it.

I just don’t have anyone who can help me with this and it sucks and I have gone on about it since I was offered and moaning about how life is unfair to me at times but now I am over it and I just feel like what can you do really? It’s nice to know I was offered and invited and I was excited about it. But I am sure there will be more opportunists and hopefully the days and times that would benefit me better than what is available at the moment.

I am also number 3 in the class in terms on how high we are in ranking to do with units covered, so not bad if I do say so myself. 😀

On to the pastries…

1.) Puff Pastry – to make what ever when home.

2.) Shortcrust Pastry – to make lemon tarts.

3.) Suet Pastry – to make spotted dick.

All turned out okay I think 😀
