So this week my son had a stone age dress up day as a nice ending to their learning of the stone age. We had to be creative spend as little as we could and look authentic…
His dress up day was Wednesday, I had to buy stuff to be able to create such a costume… So we ended up doing a last minute costume making Tuesday night! We wasn’t able to get stuff on Monday due to my son feeling unwell after school, so Tuesday after school we went to look at some fabric and found 3 faux fur animal printed fabrics which my son really liked and chose. We went home and then after dinner and putting the little one to bed me and my son set to work on hand making his costume for stone age day!
This was the first time making a proper costume or clothing and working with fabric like this so of course I had ideas, doubts and weren’t sure if it would turn out okay or as planned… But it seems when I set my mind to something and I give it my all – time, concentration, creativity and effort, I can really surprise myself and today I am so proud of myself! And my son was so happy with his costume he thinks I should do my own costume making/designing business!
Here is the build up of what I had to work with and how it turned out;
And here is how it looked altogether; (I’m being brave posting a pic of my boy so please be nice)
As you can see he was being very fierce and happy and ready to be a cave man for the day the only thing I forgot to do was muddy him up a bit but since it was raining on the way to school it would have washed off anyway. There were a few minor problems on the way to school due to the costume, it all turned out okay though. But then on my way home I had new ideas of what I could have done to make it better haha sods law really… Ah well.
I have done this many times before… Got an idea, created it the night before and it takes me all night making it look good! Here are a few projects I have done with my son for his school – the ones I could find the photos of;
This was an elephant mask I made for my son when he was in year R (reception) – (which I have never done before -never drawn an elephant and never made a mask!) I was proud of myself for this although he didn’t keep it on for long but he did love it.
They also had a space day and they got to choose which ever space thing they wanted to be dressed up as… My son of course wanted to be a space rocket! Now I thought about this long and hard and the school only gave us 3 days notice! (How the hell am I suppose to come up with a space rocket costume in such short time!) Here is the plan ideas and the build up to the result;
took me all evening, night and half of the early morning to complete it all and only got 2-3 hours sleep after creating it and before getting ready for school. He wore it too school and had a class assembly too… The only problem was i didn’t think about how he would be able to sit down where it! was a bit awkward for him haha but he loved this costume and loved everyone telling him they liked it… I even had parents come up and ask me to do their children’s costumes in the future!
This had to be the best costume I have ever done! (Until recently…) Then there was a a garden project in year 1;
Here are the build up of our garden project to the result;
Then there was a day in year 1 where the parents went to their children’s class and helped make Tudor houses… I missed this do to an appointment but when I got to the school at home time my sons teacher told me I could take some boxes from the class and take home to build one with my son… I went home that day and we made a Tudor house from a picture I found I liked… It took me all night but I loved the way it looked!
I couldn’t find the original photos i took after i made it but managed to find it and it wasn’t battered as much as it Thought so took some more to show you how it turned out. 🙂
Then another time in year 1 my sons class got given homework which was to build the London Tower Bridge and we only had the weekend to do it…
Here is how it it turned out;
I even made it so it was a working bridge!
As you can probably see, being creative can be very messy work but also fun and crafty! With all these projects I have done I have been very proud of myself and the things I can accomplish in such a short time.
Thank you for taking the time to read and see what I have done and I hope you enjoyed it!
